Hongtsho Crematorium Complex
Hongtsho, Thimphu–Punakha Highway, Bhutan
Narrative
Proposed for a site along the Thimphu–Punakha highway, the complex strings a monastic body, crematorium and reception blocks along a single axis, following an existing stream through the site.
The crematorium's circular plan and the site's east–west orientation are drawn from Buddhist cosmology — pyres to the west, prayer hall to the east — with decks positioned over the water so the stream's flow stays present throughout the complex.
“The structure is designed with a circular form for the cremation building, representing the cyclical nature of life.”
